Cultivating Schizophrenia

Readers might have noticed that this section of the blog has been quiet for some time now. Simple enough reason for that… Nothing has happened. No burning bushes, no voices from above, not even an apport or two.

This is the frustrating part for those of us that are not gifted with psychic abilities.
The lack (or apparent lack) of any progress. Sometimes the feeling arises to swing a sledgehammer through the boveda 🙂

Then the questions arise..
Why am I doing this?
Is there really any point?
Do spirits really exist? Or maybe there is yet another unknown phenomena that spirit communication is mistaken for?
Or maybe they are a bunch of lazy good for nothings, lying about smoking and drinking the cigars and rum left for them. Not all humans are diligent and hard working, why should spirits be any different?

Speaking of lazy assed humans, I must admit to being one too.
On reflection, I don’t sit down and talk to my boveda often enough.
So, a belated New Year’s resolution.
10 minutes each day I will draw up a chair in front of my boveda, and talk to myself my spirits.
They say it’s a thin line between madman and genius, maybe its a thinner line between madman and psychic!!

You know…. coming from a “gifted psychic mad(wo)man I have to say it’s been oddly quiet since about mid November. This is highly unusual for me and I have often found myself asking these very same questions….. then every so often without warning I get smacked upside the head with a message from “The Universe” the size of a 2×4. There’s no rhyme, no reason… just BAM! and then nothing.. Guess that makes me a madman/psychic 🙂

      Hi MizzB,

I have found that my intuition has developed from working with my boveda, but as far as anything that could be measured objectively… nothing 🙁

    Hi there,
Please do not use the term schizophrenia lightly. I understand what you are trying to say, that it can be courting madness when relating with spirits but I live with a mental illness and the relationship with spirits and the sort of delusions you are touching on are very different in quality, quantity and nature than authentic spirit connection.I do not live with Schizophrenia but I am a mental health activist.

It is very hard for those of us who live with and care for people living with mental illness to dispel myths and stigma associated with these problems. Light-hearted references mental illnesses is not helpful to the cause and actually does several things:
    1. Clouds the waters as to what mental illnesses are and how debilitating they can be and what different diagnoses mean.
    2. Can add to commonly held misconceptions about mental illnesses increasing stigma . I.e. that schizophrenia can be cultivated, that schizophrenia means talking to things/people who are ‘not there’. Schizophrenia is a lot more complicated than that, although that can be a symptom of psychosis it is true.
    3. Trivialises serious medical conditions and the sufferring that they can cause. Leading people to have points of view like ‘Why doesn’t he just pull himself together, we’ve all heard voices now and then” etc.
Stigma leads people to avoid seeking treatment, which increases suffering and the severity of an illness. It also makes it harder for people to talk about it with family, friends and other associates.
Please bear this in mind in future when discussing madness, do not use diagnosis specific or technical language to sensationalise or spice up your post.
Suitable substitute language includes that is still colourful and engaging:
    Mad
    Out there
    Crazy
    In la-la land
or any other colloquial non-specific, non-denigrating language.

Never use these words in any other context than to discuss mental illness. Do not use them to describe other people’s behaviour unless you are a specialist:
    Depression
    Schizophrenia
    Bi-polar
    Manic
    Psychotic
    Suicidal
    Borderline

    etc.

    Axe!
